Ever wondered what it is like to work as a surgeon with Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres?

It was a few minutes before 8 a.m. and I quickly made rounds through the crowded tent that functioned as the surgical ward. After a hurried breakfast and the morning meeting with expatriate and national staff, I was only able to spend a few moments seeing patients before rushing to the operating room. This was a Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) hospital managed by Operational Center Amsterdam in Lankien, South Sudan. I was the only surgeon. On the ward, I could only “put out fires.”
