“Advocating for a cause: Documenting land mine injuries in Cambodia” by James C. Cobey, MD, MPH, FACS

Land mines are considered “a weapon of mass destruction in slow motion.” In 1991, the nongovernmental organization (NGO) Human Rights Watch (HRW) sought the assistance of Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) to document the problem of land mines in Cambodia. Prior to this, there were limited epidemiological data on the damage caused by these weapons to a civilian population after conflict. Since anecdotal evidence existed in Cambodia about a massive land mine problem affecting the population, HRW and PHR chose this Southeast Asian country for an initial study.
